DDA & Part M / Part S
Disability Discrimination Act
There are estimated to be around 10 million disabled people in Great Britain. In 1995 the Disability Discrimination Act was the first of its kind to call for gradual improvements in the way that the owners and property managers of public buildings, retail outlets, leisure venues, educational establishments and offices achieve equal access for all members of the public.
Part M (England) and Part S (Scotland)
Part M and Part S of the Building Regulations was introduced in 1985 to ensure that all commercial buildings are suitably equipped for the needs of disabled people. Public buildings, commercial premises, retail outlets and new homes, at design and building stages, must be fitted with adequate access for all potential users of the facility. Without adhering to Part 'M' and Part 'S', planning permission will often not be granted.
Installing a Stannah Passenger Lift will ensure you are meeting the Part M (or Part S) regulations.
EN81-70
EN81-70 is the latest European (harmonised) standard affecting manufacturers of Passenger and Goods/Passenger Lifts. It identifies standards of manufacture and installation to ensure the lift is truly 'accessible'.
What is an accessible lift?
EN81-70 defines accessibility on the approach to, within and when leaving the lift. It takes into account people with push chairs, wheelchairs, walking aids, mental disability, sight and hearing impairment. All Stannah Passenger Lifts are fully compliant with EN81-70.
A Stannah Passenger Lift is always:
- One you can find (easily distinguishable from the surroundings)
- Large enough for its intended use
- One with space outside to manoeuvre
- Fitted with lift controls that are easily found and identifiable
- Fitted with visual and audible signals that let you know what is happening at all points of your journey
- One with a clear entrance of suitable width
- Fitted with reasonable levels of lighting in the car and on landings
- Accurate on stopping to ensure ease of entry and exit
