Careers - Apprentices

If you don’t take the first step, you’ll never start the journey.

We take care of our customers, our products and our people. That’s why our business has thrived since 1867.

Our founder Joseph Stannah regularly campaigned for apprenticeships back in the 1800s and often voiced his feelings on their worth and value to the company. Over 150 years and five generations later we remain committed to apprenticeships and helping each one to develop and grow.

Apprentice working on stannah

Stannah has supported Apprenticeships throughout our entire history. Our founder, Joseph Stannah, was a keen advocate of every skilled person sharing their expertise with the next generation.

All apprenticeships are focused around work-based learning, with formal and theoretical learning taking place through college or a private training company. They can take between 1-4 years to complete. The majority of your time will be spent working with your colleagues here at Stannah, and some at college or with a training provider. To start an apprenticeship, you must no longer be in full-time education.

On completing an apprenticeship, you will gain:

  • A technical certificate that demonstrates achievement of skills and knowledge related to the wider industry;
  • An NVQ or competency qualification showing you can perform well in your role;
  • A range of transferable skills including English, maths, ICT, teamwork and problem solving;
  • Employment rights and responsibilities (ERR) demonstrating knowledge of employment-related legislation and health and safety.

Levels of Apprenticeships offered

Intermediate Apprenticeships are equivalent to 5 GCSE passes. To be accepted for an Intermediate Apprenticeship you need to be enthusiastic, keen to learn and have a reasonable standard of education. We offer some Apprenticeships at this level in areas such as Business Administration and Performing Manufacturing Operations.

Advanced Apprenticeships are equivalent to 2 A-level passes. To be accepted you would normally have 5 GCSEs or more including English and Maths or have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship. Having said this, if we believe that you are the right candidate but do not have all the required qualifications, we will support you in achieving your maths and English during your Apprenticeship.

We can offer a broad range of Apprenticeships at this level including Lift Engineering, Business Administration, Team Leading, Digital Marketing, Electrical / Mechanical Engineering, Human Resources, Finance, IT Software / Hardware. This list is not exhaustive and will grow as our business grows and develops further.

Higher Apprenticeships are equivalent to a foundation degree. To be accepted you should already have a level 3 qualification, A-levels or have completed an advanced apprenticeship. In some cases, we will accept an appropriate amount of industry experience.

Stannah offers several apprentice opportunities, predominantly within our technical areas. An apprenticeship with Stannah is both an inspiring and rewarding way to start your career. We employ over 1600 staff in a variety of roles, many of whom started as apprentices and help you along the way.
