Stairlift rental
If you’re only going to need your stair lift for 3-6 months, a rental could be the most cost-effective way of giving you or your loved one freedom of movement. We offer rental stairlifts with the option to buy for both straight and curved staircases.

Reconditioned Stair Lift
Reconditioned stair lifts typically cost around 80% of the price of a new stair lift. Straight stairlifts are fully refurbished to like-new condition using a multi-point inspection process distinct to Stannah.
Straight stair lift cost
A typical straight stair lift costs about $5,700*. Many customers choose options that put them in the $5,700–$6,200 range, while others opt for a reconditioned pre-owned stair lift model to reduce the final price.
The most common options affecting your stair lift price are an automatic retractable rail for stairs with a door at the bottom or a powered swivel seat to make it easier to get off at the top landing.

Curved stair lift cost
You can expect prices for a curved stairlift to start at around $10,800*, but for an exact quote, you'll need to schedule a free, no-obligation estimate with a Stannah stairlift advisor. While pricing for a straight stair lift is fairly standard, stairs that make a turn can be a bit more complicated. Each curved stair lift is custom-measured and designed for the staircase on which it will be installed. Our custom curved rail fits your stairs perfectly, looks great, and ensures that your stair lift hugs each turn. Our double rail construction makes for a smoother and more comfortable ride when compared to other brands.

Outdoor stair lift cost
Outdoor stairlift prices typically start at $6,300*. Like indoor straight stairlifts, outdoor models use a standardized rail system, making them generally less expensive than custom curved stairlifts. However, the length of your staircase will directly affect pricing. Stannah outdoor stairlifts have many standard features that contribute to their durability and weather resistance at no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions about stairlifts
Does Medicare cover the cost of chair lifts?
No, Medicare generally does not cover the cost of chair lifts (stair lifts), as they are considered home improvements rather than medically necessary equipment. Medicare Part A and Part B focus on covering medical treatments, hospital stays, and durable medical equipment necessary for treatment, which typically does not include chair lifts for stairs.
How much does a stair lift cost?
The biggest factor affecting stairlift cost is whether your staircase is straight or curved. We use a standardized rail, cut to the appropriate length for straight-run staircases, but stairs that turn require a custom-designed curved rail to fit the different bends and shapes of these staircases. Because of this, curved stair lifts are generally more expensive than straight-run stair lifts.
If you want your stair lift to park around a corner or somewhere away from the stairs, an extra rail will increase the cost of your stair lift. The length of the rail is another important determining factor for pricing a stair lift. While most staircases are between 12 and 15 steps up, the longer the flight of stairs, the more the stair lift will cost.
While Stannah stairlifts include many useful features as standard, upgrades such as a powered swivel seat can increase the overall price. The type of stairlift remains the primary driver of cost.

Is the cost of a stair lift cheaper than the cost of an assisted living facility?
In many cases, a stairlift costs significantly less than the annual cost of an assisted living facility. For some homeowners, the decision involves weighing the cost of a stairlift against the cost of moving to an assisted living community. While a stairlift requires an upfront investment, it can be considerably less expensive than the recurring costs associated with assisted living.
When you consider the long-term costs of assisted living, a Stannah stair lift is not only more affordable, but it also lets you stay in the home you love, navigating your stairs in comfort and safety.
The average assisted living facility costs $4,300 per month before additional expenses such as medication or medical care. That works out to $51,600 per year! A Stannah stair lift is a one-time investment, averaging about $8,000, less than one-fifth the annual average cost of assisted living. With a lifespan of 10-20 years, the cost becomes even more manageable over time, making it a practical and affordable solution for staying safe and independent in your home.
Why Buy a New Stair Lift vs. Buying One Used?
Both new and reconditioned stairlifts can be reliable options, depending on your budget and needs. Stannah is proud to offer certified, reconditioned stair lifts to our customers. Reconditioned stair lifts provide financial savings while maintaining the same quality and safety features you expect from Stannah.
Reconditioned stair typically cost about 80% of the price of a new stair lift. Straight rails, chairs, and carriages are fully refurbished before being refitted for your home. A refurbished curved stairlift, however, requires a new rail because it is custom-made for each staircase. A reconditioned stair lift carries a ten-year motor and gearbox warranty plus one-year parts and one-year labour costs. A brand-new Stannah comes with a lifetime motor gearbox warranty, plus a 2-year parts warranty and a 1-year labour warranty. If you know that you will only need your stair lift for a short time, it might make more sense to buy a used model. You can save on the initial purchase while still taking advantage of Stannah's excellent warranty.
