The different types of home lifts: how to make the right choice?
Installing a home lift is more than a question of mobility – it’s a lifestyle choice. A lift not only improves independence and comfort, it also modernises your home and adds value to your property.
Here, we’ll explore the main types of domestic lifts and introduce Uplifts S2 and S3, two elegant, space-saving models from Stannah designed to fit seamlessly into your life and your home.

What types of home lifts exist?
Home lifts are designed to make everyday life easier and support independent living. Different technologies are available:
Hydraulic lifts
These mechanisms use pistons powered by a pump and fluid reservoir. They usually require a machine room, take up extra space, consume more energy at start-up, and are slower than electric models. Best suited to medium-sized buildings, they also raise issues with oil disposal at the end of life.
Pneumatic lifts
Those move using air pressure, without cables or pistons. Compact and suitable for one or two people, they are ideal for small spaces. However, they are limited in height, expensive, and mainly used for short distances.
Screw-driven lifts
Screw-driven lifts operate via a vertical screw powered by a motor. They don’t require a shaft, cables, or machinery and integrate neatly into new homes. Their drawback: slower speeds and limited travel height, making them less suitable for retrofits.
Conventional electric lifts
The traction lifts rely on cables and pulleys. Strong and reliable, they are common in larger buildings but generally need a machine room, create more noise, and demand regular maintenance – not always practical for private homes.
To offer a better alternative, Stannah created Uplifts – compact, quiet, machine-room-free electric lifts explicitly designed for domestic use.

Did you know?
Stannah Uplifts are a key part of the home. Besides providing unlimited mobility for all ages, they are also a stylish feature that increases the house's value.
Uplifts S2
Perfect for compact homes, the Uplifts S2 combines discreet design with advanced engineering. Its traction system is fully integrated into the cabin, ensuring quiet and space-saving operation.
With an internal height of 1.95 m and an internal width of 0.74 m, it comfortably carries up to two people. Despite its small size, it offers smooth, intuitive travel between floors. It is also available in a compact size to suit lower ceiling heights, with a height of 1.80 m.
Good to know: each trip consumes no more energy than a standard kettle.

Uplifts S3
The Uplifts S3 offers more space and accessibility, carrying up to three standing passengers or one wheelchair user. With an interior height of 1.95 m and an internal width of 1.14 m, it’s an excellent choice for households that need more capacity or accessibility, which remains true even in the compact model.
The cable-driven system is built directly into the cabin, saving surrounding space and ensuring a quiet, smooth ride. With clean lines and understated style, the S3 integrates beautifully into any interior while enhancing your home’s value. Like the S2, it consumes as little energy as a kettle.
A dual-access door system will be available soon, allowing entry and exit from either side.
